From Peter Ausenhus --
The only people more irritating than ignorant sports personalities ravaging
soccer are American soccer fans that believe they have to promote the game.
There will never, never, never be world class professional soccer in the
U.S. (Well, if you could guarantee that the U.S. would win the World Cup
every four years--and not lose any qualifiers in between.)
Over the past 10 years, I've spent more on one UK football game than on the
big four U.S. sports combined. As long as there's an internet I can follow
my team.
US "result": An embarrassment, not because they lost to a quality team but
because they threw away four years of preparation on a tentative, sleepy
effort. Q: England, with perhaps the greatest football ancestry and culture,
hired a foreign coach because (at least to those making the decision) he
offered them the greatest chance to win. The U.S., with no soccer background
of any note, has an American coach who may have shown his lack of quality
this afternoon in preparing this most talented of U.S. sides.
